Lighthouses

Charleston is home to two lighthouses: the Sullivan’s Island and Morris Island lighthouses.  The modern monolithic Sullivan’s Island Lighthouse, the last major lighthouse built by the federal government, has a unique triangular shape, with one point directed towards the ocean, allowing it to withstand winds of up to 125 miles per hour. The current lighthouse on Morris Island, is the island’s third tower.  The first was destroyed in a hurricane and the second during the Civil War.
